San Diego Ductless HVAC Systems

What do you think of when you hear the term “ductless system”? A space heater? A window air conditioning unit? If so, then we have some exciting information to share with you. A ductless system, otherwise known as a ductless mini split, is actually a whole-house HVAC system. Additionally, these systems are capable of both heating and cooling a house. Sound too good to be true? We’re happy to explain how it is that these systems work.

Before we do, though, we want to remind you that even systems that are designed to maximize user experience, efficiency, and convenience can and will fall short if not properly installed and serviced. That is why we urge you to schedule your ductless system services in San Diego County, CA with a member of our team. Excel Air is and has been family owned and operated since 1999, and we excel where others fail. Contact us if you think that going ductless is right for you.

Ductless Heating and Ductless Air Conditioning, Combined!

In order to understand how it is that a ductless mini split can offer both heating and cooling, you must first understand the way a heat pump operates. This system works on the same heat transfer principle, but does not use a centralized system of ductwork the way that a traditional air–source heat pump does. Instead, individual blowers are installed throughout the house.

In the summer, these indoor units evaporate refrigerant to draw heat out of the air. That cooled air is cycled back into the house, while the hot refrigerant is pumped out to the condenser unit. There, its heat is shed via the condenser coils, and it is cycled back through the system to repeat the process.

This is, with the exception of the wall–mounted blowers, the same way that a central AC works. Heat pump technology allows for the reversal of this heat transfer cycle, though. That means that, in the winter, refrigerant will travel in the opposite direction. The outdoor unit now draws heat out of the air outside, the refrigerant is compressed to boost its thermal energy, and that heat is used to warm air in your home at the blowers.

Benefits of Ductless Heating and Air Conditioning

Ductless mini splits offer a lot of benefits, the most obvious being the incredible convenience of having a heating and cooling system in one. The other major benefit is the fact this method of heating is incredibly efficient and particularly well suited to mild winters like ours. Plus, the system can be installed with minimal disruption to existing properties, and in those that cannot really accommodate full ductwork systems.

Because the individual blowers are all controlled independently of one another, you can also maintain different temperatures in different areas of the house. You won’t have to worry about leaky ductwork wasting energy, either, or allowing pollutants into the system. This helps to boost energy efficiency while protecting your indoor air quality.
